Happy Birthday Yunel!

Let’s see, who to pick for Star of the Day…so hard to figure out.

Yunel_2How can you not pick the guy who hit a grand slam on his 24th birthday, his first homer of the AFL season? Yunel Escobar did just that on Thursday. With his Javelinas leading, 4-1, Escobar cleared the bases in the seventh with a jack to give Peoria an 8-1 victory. It may have been Escobar’s first round-tripper, but he’s been doing just about everything else in the AFL. He went 3-for-5 in the game to raise his average to a league-leading .407. His .987 OPS isn’t bad for a guy without much power and he’s tied for third in the league with 24 hits. The Cuban shortstop had a so-so year in Double-A Mississippi, hitting .264, so it will be interesting to see if there’s any carryover from this AFL explosion.

Mild disappointment on the Beat the Streak front. Mitch Maier didn’t play last night. I’m not liking the matchup against Mesa today, so I’ll go to Peoria and go with Red Sox OF Jacoby Ellsbury. Tomorrow, I’m giving the nod to one of the guests on the AFL on ATM today (noon ET), Chip Cannon.
