Appel won’t sign with Pirates
Stanford ace Mark Appel, who went No. 8 overall in this year’s First-Year Player Draft, will not sign with the Pittsburgh Pirates and will return to Stanford for his senior season.
Appel, whom many thought could go No. 1 overall to the Houston Astros, fell to the Pirates at No. 8. Without too much wiggle room with their Draft pool, it was believed the most Pittsburgh would be able to offer Appel was approximately $4 million. There has been no confirmation on what the final offer was, but evidently Appel chose to return to school for one more year and re-enter the Draft in 2013.
